Department Oratorical Contest

March 14, 2020 - Manhattan Post 17

This March, up to nine high school students will compete for scholarship money and the chance to represent Kansas at the National High School Oratorical Championship in Indianapolis. Department Oratorical Chairman Mike Oppy has set the State Oratorical Scholarship Contest for 9 AM, Saturday, March 14 at American Legion Post #17 in Manhattan.
The purpose of The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program “A Constitutional Speech Contest” is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States among high school students. Other objectives of the contest include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently, and the preparation for acceptance of the duties and responsibilities, the rights and privileges of American citizenship.

2020 District Conventions

Beginning in March and continuing each weekend throughout April, Districts will meet in Convention for the purpose of conducting its business and electing officers for the 2020-21 membership year which begins on July 1. Each District is required to elect Representatives to the Department Convention’s Constitution and Bylaws, Resolutions, Credentials and Rules Committees, and the District’s Delegates and Alternates to the National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky, August 28 - September 3, 2020. Every Legionnaire is encouraged to attend their District’s Convention as a delegate, alternate, or guest representing their Post. Interested members should notify their Post they wish to serve as a Delegate or Alternate to their District or the Department Convention, or both.

Department Convention

Ramada Hotel, Topeka May 15-17, 2020

The Ramada Hotel, 420 SE 6th St., in Topeka will serve as the site of the 101st Annual Convention of The American Legion Department of Kansas.  Joining the Legion in Convention will be the American Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion who will hold their own independent Conventions in addition to two joint sessions involving all three groups.
